What We Must Learn from the NSU Story: School Cinema Puts Radicalization in Focus

On November 4, as part of the November Days, the school cinema event took place at Alter Gasometer. The film “The Perpetrators – Today Is Not All Days” was shown, shedding light on the radicalization of the NSU core trio. Unlike last year, when the victims were the focus, this time the question was: How could seemingly ordinary teenagers become right-wing extremists and terrorists?

A big compliment goes to the future social assistants from Euro Akademie Zwickau, who accompanied the event with seven workshops. Their commitment and peer-to-peer training demonstrated how important it is to actively involve young people in political education. The participating students also deserve recognition for their openness and willingness to engage in discussion.

The event made it clear how central democracy, human dignity, and civil courage are to our coexistence. The film and the subsequent reflection reminded us that radicalization does not occur in a vacuum but in social niches that we all help shape.

The history of the NSU is not a closed chapter. It reminds us that right-wing extremism and racism remain a real threat. It is not enough to be concerned—we must act: in everyday life, in schools, in society. Each of us bears responsibility to ensure that “Today Is Not All Days” does not become a bitter reality.
