During the warmer months, Zwickau’s neighborhoods take on a relaxed summer atmosphere, which is brought to life through various community activities as part of the “Engagiert im Quartier” project.

Although the second neighborhood game afternoon in Neuplanitz saw lower turnout than the kickoff event due to the vacation season, those in attendance still enjoyed a pleasant time together, focusing on traditional games like dominoes and Mikado. The series will continue at the end of August with a community barbecue and Iftar at the Pusteblume daycare center.

Meanwhile, participants in the coffee get-together in the Pölbitz neighborhood enjoyed the summer weather at the Hermann Duncker allotment garden. Under the festival tent, with freshly baked strawberry cake, melon, and delicious chocolate cookies, the conversation and birdsong created an atmosphere that was almost like a relaxed vacation. The small group meets regularly and is open to anyone interested who enjoys fellowship as well as coffee and cake.

During the regular neighborhood meeting, those in attendance took the opportunity to plan upcoming events in Pölbitz in detail. The neighborhood barbecue is scheduled for August 26, 2026, which marks a small anniversary for the neighborhood’s community efforts this year. For this anniversary event, organizers are currently looking for musicians who are willing to bring their own instruments and play on the green field. At the same time, planning has already begun for the 2026 neighborhood Christmas market, during which initial outlines and minor changes were discussed. Planning will continue in August, and the project welcomes support from residents and local business owners.

In addition, the neighborhood’s local movie screenings were once again very well received by the community during the second showing. The next movie night is scheduled for August 21, 2026, and will specifically focus on classics from DEFA’s history with a screening of the film *Seven Freckles*.

These cultural offerings make a lasting contribution to strengthening the neighborhood’s identity and provide opportunities for people to come together. By bringing together culture, leisure, and community organizing, the neighborhood work of the Alter Gasometer association demonstrates how participation can succeed on a small scale.
